With gyms all around the world closed, YouTube workouts have been a massive saviour during lockdown. Besides the obvious physical benefits, working out on YouTube is also a welcome escape from all the craziness going on in the world right now.
I’ve worked out online periodically over the last few years but have really stepped it up over the past couple of months. I now make a daily habit of YouTube workouts. I have to admit, while I am far from looking like the Hulk, I have never been in such good shape. I am actually starting to get some guns!
Now that I’ve got a solid home workout routine in place, I can’t believe that I ever paid for a gym membership. Why did I ever think it was a good idea to spend £90/month on going to the gym? £90!! At the time I would have told myself that it is an investment in my health. What I now know is that I was a total idiot. You don’t need to pay a small fortune to look after your health. Lesson well and truly learned.
There must be thousands of people just like me thinking exactly the same thing. If I can get results at home for very little or no money, why do I need to ever need to step foot inside a gym again? Let’s face it, gyms can be pretty intimidating places. I’ve had plenty of run-ins with machinery I didn’t understand. I would much rather exercise in an embarrassment-free zone where no-one can see me than I would sweat in front of strangers.
You don’t need to pay a small fortune to look after your health.
Swapping the gym for YouTube workouts is such an easy way to cut down your monthly outgoings. There is so much available FOR FREE that you really can get your body and your finances in shape at the same time.
With SO many online workouts out there, it’s really easy to get overwhelmed. I’ve whittled down the myriad of options to the best workouts I’ve come across on YouTube. I like these YouTubers for different reasons and love to mix and match.
All-body tone: Rebecca Louise Fitness
I’ve been following Rebecca Louise for a few years and think her channel is the best for all-body toning. There are A TON of free workouts on her YouTube channel working every single part of the body. She releases a new video every day so it’s pretty hard to get bored.
What I like most about Rebecca Louise is her motivation. She’s big on mindset – “what the mind can conceive, the mind can achieve” and all that. When you’re tired and not really in the mood for working out, it really helps to have her uplifting spirit pushing you through.
I recently signed up to her BTES app and am loving it! You get a 30-day calendar with a different 28-minute workout (plus warm-up and cool-down) every day. It really helps to have your workout schedule decided for you and means that you don’t neglect any body part. Left to my own devices, I would probably only ever do ab workouts, but, thanks to the app, I now love building my legs and booty! And, for only $3.99 per month for a basic membership, it’s an absolute bargain!
Serious dance cardio: The Fitness Marshall
The Fitness Marshall workouts are, without doubt, the most fun you will ever do. For the uninitiated, The Fitness Marshall a.k.a. Caleb Marshall, helps you to unleash your inner pop diva with original dance workouts. He puts together sassy routines to all the best tunes for you to dance along to.
While there are loads of fun routines available for free, The Fitness Marshall also has a members’ Booty Army, which gives access to weekly live Sweat Sessions. I’ve been a member of the Booty Army and loved it. At £12.99 per month, it’s a little pricier than some of the other paid-for YouTube workouts out there. However, if you commit to it every week, it’s totally worth the money. The sessions really do make you sweat and you have the best fun while doing it! There’s a free 30-minute session you can try to see whether the Booty Army is for you before signing up.
Nineties and noughties fun: MadFit
I recently came across MadFit’s channel and have no idea how I have missed it for so long. With over 3.8 million subscribers, she’s a pretty big deal!
MadFit has lots of short, apartment-friendly workouts that target all areas of the body. My favourite is her song workout series. How many channels can say they have a choreographed routine to Eminem’s Lose Yourself?!
Sofa sweating: Blogilates
Ever done a workout from your sofa before? I hadn’t either until I came across this gem from Blogilates!
Not only does she produce amazing workouts, she puts them all into a workout calendar every month. And all for free! Head to her website to download her latest calendar.
Lengthen and unwind: Yoga with Adriene
Yoga with Adriene has been my go-to online yoga practice for a while now. What I love about her is how she has made yoga accessible to all. Going to live yoga classes can be extremely expensive, but by making her content available for free, Adriene has helped so many people connect with their body and mind.
Although I know yoga is a holistic practice, one of my favourite things about Yoga with Adriene is how it’s very easy to find a quick video to help you stretch out any body part that’s causing you trouble. I often get a lot of shoulder and upper back pain and Adriene’s routine never fails to loosen things up.
